Hardwoods or Softwoods ?
Trees are commonly classified as hardwoods or softwoods, though these terms can be misleading. Hardwoods come from angiosperms—flowering plants like oak and maple—which usually have broad leaves and are often deciduous, although some tropical species are evergreen. Their trunks typically branch out, giving them a dendritic shape. Softwoods, on the other hand, are conifers such as pine and spruce. These trees generally have needle-like or scale-like leaves and are mostly evergreen, though exceptions like larch and bald-cypress lose their leaves in autumn. Softwoods usually feature a single, straight trunk—a form known as excurrent growth—ideal for shedding snow. Despite the names, not all hardwoods are hard (like balsa), and not all softwoods are soft (like yew). Still, this classification is useful for distinguishing major types of trees and some of their wood’s characteristics.
